Institute of
Physics
Physics is a fundamental science. Although its history, philosophy, and practices are shared and connected with many other disciplines, especially mathematics, it has long grown into a distinct and separate discipline.
About the Institute of Physics
The Institute of Physics was officially established during the BOR meeting on September 26, 2024. This milestone marks a year of academic research excellence, along with a steadfast commitment to advancing physics education, fostering scientific inquiry, and serving the nation.
Vision
- To contribute to the advancements of physics and development of new technologies and solutions to practical problems;
- To produce the next generations of physicists;
- To enhance the quality of physics education in the country; and
- To promote the relevance of physics in daily life and the use of science in policy and decision-making.
Mission
The Institute of Physics aims to be recognized as a world-class academic research institution in basic and applied physics.
Academics
Undergraduate Degree Program
The BS Applied Physics Program aims to produce graduates who:
- demonstrate mastery of the core areas of physics;
- apply principles and methods of physics to solve real-world problems and arrive at decisions;
- synthesize and effectively communicate scientific information; and
- uphold the University's values of honor and excellence through professionalism, volunteerism, and the promotion of just systems for the advancement of the welfare of their countrymen.

Astrophysics, Particle Physics, and Nuclear Physics
The cluster is involved with the investigation of inflationary cosmology, and nuclear physics within the context of astrophysics such as nucleosynthesis in the early universe.
-
Analytics, Complex, and Environmental Systems
The ACES Laboratory studies systems whose behavior and interaction are not simple sums of their components, such as granular materials, social, biological and environmental systems, using theoretical, experimental, and computational physics.
-
Chemical Physics and Materials Modeling
The cluster's mission is to perform world-class research on the properties of materials, working within the boundaries of solid state chemistry and condensed matter physics.
-
Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics
Theoretical work focused on quantum transport in nanoscale devices, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, electronic structure calculations, novel 2D materials, surfaces and interfaces, with experimental work centered on FTIR, XPS, and STM.
-
Materials Physics and Engineering
Utilizes experimental and computational techniques in designing and fabricating materials. In 2018, the Surface and Interface Research Group was recognized as the CAS Outstanding Research Team.
-
Optics and Instrumentation
Interests in the design and building of scientific instruments and devices for measurement and analysis, and robotics and automation for agricultural, environmental and various industrial applications.
-
Quantum Information and Foundations of Quantum Mechanics
We study the time-dependent aspects of quantum physics in terms of wavepackets, correlation functions, semiclassical methods.
